How this list was built — and what it isn't

We ran the searches a Modesto homeowner would run — tree service, tree removal, emergency tree removal, tree removal cost — in September 2026, and wrote down every distinct local business that appeared in the organic results, the map results, or the City of Modesto's Approved Tree Vendor List. That produced the 16 names below. We then read what each company publishes about itself and noted the things that are actually checkable: a license number, a City list, a stated specialty, a 24/7 claim.

What this page is not: a ranking. We haven't hired these companies, we don't publish star ratings or review counts (they change weekly and you can see the live ones yourself), and the order is alphabetical. Where a company describes itself as "40+ years" or "certified," that's the company's own description and we say so. Where we haven't looked closely at a company, we say that too.

How to choose between them

Match the company to the job

City street tree? Only a company on the City's Approved Tree Vendor List can do the work, and the request goes through the City's Community Forestry Division first — see the Modesto permit guide. Three names above are on that list as of our check. Palm? Palms are their own trade in practice (different climbing, different disposal), and one company here specializes. Storm damage tonight? Two companies here advertise 24/7 response; the emergency page covers what to do before anyone arrives. Big commercial or HOA property? The generalist landscape firm is built for that scale in a way a two-truck tree outfit isn't.

Then check the same three things every time

• License. Ask for the CSLB number, look it up at cslb.ca.gov, and confirm it's active and C-49 (Tree and Palm Contractor). California requires a licensed contractor for any job over $1,000 in labor and materials, which is most removals. Only one company above publishes its number on its site; that doesn't mean the others lack one — it means you have to ask.
• Insurance. Ask for a certificate of liability insurance and workers' comp. Tree work injuries on your property without workers' comp can land on you.

Signals worth weighing

The City's Approved Tree Vendor List is a real signal: the City has decided those companies can work on its trees. An ISA Certified Arborist on staff is a real signal for anything where the question is "can this tree be saved" rather than "how fast can it come down." Years in business is a weaker signal than it sounds — a 40-year company and a 7-year company can both do excellent work — but a company that has been around through several storm seasons has been tested in ways a new one hasn't. Review counts are a signal too; just read the recent ones, not the average.

What we'd ask on the first call

1. "Can you send me your CSLB license number and insurance certificate?"
2. "Does the quote include the stump, and what happens to the wood?"
3. "How would you bring this tree down, given what's under it?"
4. "Is this a City street tree, and if so are you on the approved vendor list?"
5. "If you damage the fence or a sprinkler line, what happens?"
